Solution Solar Battery
0nly after the first month of living with my solar battery did I stop checking the app every few minutes. I had expected the installation to be the stressful part, but the crew finished in an afternoon, mounted the battery beside my inverter, and explained the settings without making me feel foolish.
My first useful surprise was how quiet the changeover felt. During sunny hours, panels run the house and fill the battery; after sunset, it takes over automatically. I mainly bought it to avoid expensive evening electricity, and that is where it has earned its keep.
Before storage, my dishwasher, air conditioner, and induction hob all competed with the grid between five and nine p.m. Now I set the battery to discharge during that window. On a typical weekday, my evening grid use has dropped from roughly 9 kWh to 2 kWh, depending on cooking and weather. That usually saves me about $1.50 to $2 per day, which sounds small until I look at the monthly bill. Last month, my bill was $62 lower than the same month last year, even though our utility rates increased.
I also like having a reserve for outages. During one windy evening, the power flickered twice, but the battery kept our refrigerator, Wi-Fi, and a couple of lights running.
The only hiccup happened in January. After a firmware update, the app showed the battery at 100% for hours, even while the house was clearly drawing power. I turned the system off and on using the manufacturer's instructions, but the reading stayed frozen. A support technician asked for a screenshot, checked the inverter remotely, and reset the battery sensor. Within ten minutes, it was reporting normally again.
I keep a 10kw lithium battery charger nearby, though solar has made it unnecessary this entire year so far.
