Over the last eight months, my solar battery has changed how I use energy at home. Before installing it, our rooftop solar system exported much of its afternoon production, while we bought expensive electricity after sunset. I chose a 10 kWh lithium iron phosphate battery mainly for evening use, not backup bragging rights. I initially searched online for solar ups for home. The installer mounted the battery in our garage, connected it to the existing solar inverter, and finished the work in one day.
The biggest difference appears on weekdays. Our utility uses time-of-use pricing, so I now charge the battery from late-afternoon solar generation and run the house from it between 4:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. That includes cooking dinner, running the dishwasher, watching television, and occasionally using the heat pump. Before the battery, those hours regularly pushed our daily bill above $8; now they usually cost about $3–$4, depending on weather and how much laundry we do. Our monthly bill fell from roughly $185 in summer to $112 last summer, despite similar air conditioning use. This is not a magical zero-bill result, because we still pay connection charges and buy power during cloudy stretches. Still, the peak-hour savings are easy to see in the monitoring app. On a clear day, the battery reaches full charge by mid-afternoon, then gradually drops to around 25% overnight.
I did have one minor scare in January. After a brief outage, the battery showed “standby” and did not discharge that evening. I checked the app, reset the backup setting, and called the installer. They explained that the system was waiting for the grid signal to stabilize, not losing capacity. It resumed automatically about twenty minutes later. Since then, I have left the settings alone and keep an eye on the battery state of charge.
