I installed my home solar battery after watching our electricity bills climb every summer. The system is a 10kWh lithium phosphate battery connected to my rooftop solar array through a hybrid inverter.

The biggest difference has been avoiding peak-hour electricity rates. Before storage, we used to send excess midday solar back to the grid and then buy power after dinner, when the kids were showering, cooking, and charging devices. Now the battery usually fills between late morning and early afternoon. It supplies the house from about 4:00 p.m. until bedtime.

My bills have fallen by roughly 35%, although the amount changes with weather and our habits. In July, I saved about $48 compared with the same month last year. That may not sound dramatic, but I expect the battery to pay for itself, and I appreciate having more predictable costs.

I did have one troubleshooting moment. After a firmware update, the battery stopped discharging overnight even though the monitoring app showed plenty of stored energy. I checked the breaker, restarted the inverter, and waited ten minutes before turning it back on. The discharge resumed, but I contacted the installer anyway. They explained that the update had changed the reserve setting from 10% to 30%. Lowering it restored normal operation, though I kept the higher reserve during a week of stormy weather.

What I like most is not the app graphs but the routine: solar power charges the battery, the battery carries the evening load, and the grid becomes a backup instead of my default source. I use grid electricity on cloudy days, but the storage system has made our solar investment feel much more useful.
