I installed a 10-kWh lithium iron phosphate battery beside my inverter last spring, after getting tired of watching my electricity bill jump every summer evening. My main goal was simple: use more of my own solar power after sunset instead of selling it to the grid cheaply during the day and buying it back at peak rates.
The setup was less dramatic than I expected. The installer mounted the home battery in my garage, connected it to my rooftop solar array, and added an energy monitoring app. The only real surprise was that the battery needed a reliable Wi-Fi signal for the app to report properly. My garage is at the back of the house, so the first evening showed several gaps in the data. A small mesh Wi-Fi unit fixed that, and I have not had a connection problem since.
The savings became obvious during peak hours. Before the battery, our dishwasher, cooking, lights, and air-conditioning usually ran from the grid between 5 and 9 p.m. Now the solar battery covers most of that period. On sunny days, the panels charge it by mid-afternoon, and the battery then discharges gradually through the evening. In July, my electric bill dropped from about $210 to $125, despite using the air conditioner more than usual. That is not a perfect month-to-month comparison, but the difference was noticeable.
I also like seeing the battery reserve on the app. I keep a 25 percent backup level, so it can still run the refrigerator, internet equipment, and a few lights during a short outage. We had one five-hour outage during a storm, and the transition was automatic. I did not even notice until the app sent me an alert.
The battery has not eliminated my bill, but it has made solar energy storage feel practical rather than theoretical. For my household, shifting daytime solar into expensive evening hours has been the most valuable feature.
