Solution Solar Inverter
I installed a lithium ion battery for solar last spring, mostly because our evening electricity rates had become painful. I already had rooftop solar panels, but by dinner time they were producing almost nothing. The battery changed that routine immediately. Instead of sending every afternoon kilowatt-hour back to the grid for a modest credit, it now sits in storage until our house needs it.
The installation itself was less dramatic than I expected. The crew mounted the battery in our garage beside the inverter, ran a new backup circuit for the refrigerator and internet equipment, and finished in roughly half a day. I spent that evening watching the monitoring app, which showed solar generation, battery state of charge, and household consumption separately. Seeing the battery fill at lunchtime and discharge after sunset made the system feel understandable rather than mysterious.
The biggest difference appears between 4:00 and 9:00 p.m., when our utility charges peak rates. Before storage, my air conditioner, induction cooktop, and dishwasher were all pulling from the grid during those expensive hours. Now the solar battery handles most of that load. Our average evening grid use fell from about 11 kilowatt-hours to 3 or 4. On a typical month, that saves me around $45 to $60, depending on weather and how much air conditioning we use. It is not a dramatic overnight escape from the utility bill, but it is a steady reduction I can actually see.
I did have one scare during the first week. The app showed the battery at 100 percent, yet house was drawing from the grid. I checked settings and found backup reserve had been set high after firmware update. Lowering it from 40 percent to 20 percent solved the issue. I kept the higher reserve during winter, when outages are likely.
Overall, the battery storage system has been practical rather than flashy. I notice it most when cooking after sunset and checking a lower peak-hour charge.
