I installed a 10 kWh lithium ion battery system last summer, mainly to stop buying expensive electricity during the evening peak. My rooftop solar panels usually fill the battery by midafternoon, and the system automatically switches our house over around 4 p.m. Before storage, I was using the grid for cooking, laundry, air conditioning, and lights when power rates were highest. That was the most frustrating part of my bill.
The difference showed up immediately. My monthly electricity bill dropped from roughly $180 to between $65 and $85, depending on the weather. On sunny days, the battery still has 40–50 percent charge at bedtime, so it carries us through the night and starts recharging the next morning. During cloudy weeks, the solar battery does not perform miracles, but it still covers the most expensive evening hours. I especially notice the savings when we run the dishwasher and washing machine after dinner.
The setup was simpler than I expected, although the installer spent most of a day checking the main panel, adding the battery inverter, and configuring the energy monitoring app. The app is now my favorite feature. I can see solar production, battery charge, household demand, and grid usage almost in real time. I discovered that our old refrigerator was using more power than expected and replaced it, which made the storage system last longer overnight.
One small troubleshooting moment happened after a software update. The battery stopped discharging for about an hour, even though the app showed plenty of stored energy. I restarted the inverter, waited a few minutes, and it resumed normally. Support also confirmed the settings were fine.
I even searched for a “lithium ion battery charger for aa1.5 volts” while organizing backup items, but that little charger is completely separate from my home battery. Overall, this solar battery has delivered practical peak-hour savings, quieter nights, and much less dependence on the utility grid.
