I installed a 10-kWh home battery last spring, mostly because our electricity bill had become frustratingly unpredictable. We already had rooftop solar, but by late afternoon the panels were producing less just as our family started cooking, running the dishwasher, and turning on air-conditioning. The utility’s peak rate made that timing especially painful.
The installation itself was less dramatic than expected. The installer mounted the lithium ion batteries in the garage beside the inverter, added a backup gateway, and connected the system to an app. It took most of a day, including inspection. I did have to move a shelf and clear wall space, so “simple installation” still meant a weekend of tidying for me. Once it was commissioned, I set the battery to charge from surplus solar and discharge between 4 and 9 p.m.
That schedule has made the biggest difference. Before storage, we exported a lot of cheap midday solar and then bought expensive grid electricity at dinner. Now the solar battery covers the oven, refrigerator, lights, and usually the air-conditioner during those hours. Our summer bill dropped from about $210 to $128, despite weather and usage. It is not a magical zero bill—the battery is not large enough to run everything overnight—but seeing the graph show almost no peak-rate purchases feels satisfying.
I did have one troubleshooting moment. After a firmware update, the app showed the battery at 100 percent evening, but the house was still drawing from the grid. I power-cycled the gateway, waited five minutes, and restarted the app; normal discharge returned. Support confirmed it was a communication glitch, not a battery problem.
After several months, my main advice is to size storage around your evening habits, not your total daily consumption. For me, lithium ion batteries are most valuable as a peak-hour buffer.
