lifpo4 battery

I installed a lifpo4 battery energy storage system last spring, mostly because my utility had brutal evening rates. My rooftop solar already covered much of the daytime load, but I was still sending cheap power to the grid and buying it back after dinner. The battery changed that routine more than I expected.

I programmed it to charge from solar and discharge between 4:00 and 9:00 p.m. On sunny days, it usually reaches 100% by mid-afternoon. When we cook, run the dishwasher, and start laundry after work, the solar battery supplies the house. I can see the difference on the utility app: my evening usage drops close to zero, apart from an amount pulled when the heat pump starts. My monthly bill fell from roughly $180 to $70-80 during the summer month. It is not magic—cloudy stretches still cost me—but the peak-hour savings are very real.

The only hiccup came during a firmware update. The inverter stopped discharging at sunset, and I noticed because the house suddenly pulled from the grid. I checked the monitoring screen, restarted the battery gateway, and waited about ten minutes. The system recovered, but I later learned the update needed a manual confirmation in the installer app. Now I keep alerts enabled and glance at the state of charge before bed.

I also appreciate the quietness. There isn't a fan roaring beside the garage, and the lifpo4 battery cabinet stays cool even while charging. I have not needed backup power yet, but knowing the refrigerator, lights, and internet can keep running during an outage makes the investment feel practical rather than flashy. For my home, the biggest win is simple: I use more of my own solar energy instead of paying peak rates. Six months in, the system still feels worth it.
