I installed a 10 kWh home battery last spring, and the biggest surprise was how quickly our evening electricity use changed. Before the battery, our solar panels sent plenty of power to the grid during lunch, then we bought it back after dinner at a much higher rate. Now the battery stores that midday surplus and runs the house through the expensive hours.

The installation itself was less dramatic than I expected. The installer mounted the battery in our garage beside the inverter, added a new energy meter, and connected the system to the existing solar array in one day. I chose a unit using lifepo4 zellen because I wanted a chemistry known for safety and a long cycle life. I am not an electrician, so I left the wiring and commissioning to the professionals, but the monitoring app made the setup easy to understand.

On a normal sunny day, the battery reaches roughly 95 percent by late afternoon. Around 5 p.m., it starts covering the kitchen, refrigerator, Wi-Fi equipment, and heat pump. We usually reach bedtime with 30 to 40 percent remaining. During the first full month, our grid purchases fell by about 55 percent, and the demand during peak-rate hours nearly disappeared. Our bill dropped from around $210 to $128, although weather and utility rates obviously affect that comparison.

The practical benefit is not just the dollar amount. I no longer think about running the dishwasher before sunset or turning off the heat pump when rates rise. One cloudy week exposed a limitation: the battery reached only 62 percent, so it could not cover the entire night. Still, it handled the most expensive hours and recharged the next morning. I check the state of charge occasionally, but otherwise the solar battery has been remarkably quiet and uneventful.
