I installed a 10kWh LiFePO4 solar battery last spring, mainly to stop buying expensive evening electricity. My rooftop array is only 6.4kW, but on sunny days it fills the battery by midafternoon. The hybrid inverter then carries the house from dinner until breakfast, which has made a bigger difference than I expected. Before storage, our oven, heat pump, and water heater all ran during the utility’s peak window. Now the battery handles those short bursts, and the grid meter barely moves between four and nine o’clock.
My monthly bills fell from $185 to $92 over the three summer months, despite using the air conditioner more. That is not a perfect comparison, because weather and rates changed, but the evening discharge is clearly doing the work. I set the battery reserve to 25 percent, so there is still backup capacity when clouds arrive. Watching the monitoring app show solar generation, battery state of charge, and household load has become a satisfying habit.
The only hiccup happened in July. The battery stopped discharging at 58 percent state of charge, even though the inverter showed no fault. I checked the basics first: AC breakers, the communication cable, and the battery’s BMS log. A loose RJ45 plug was the culprit. After reseating it and restarting the inverter, discharge resumed within a minute. While checking the compartment, I also inspected the lifepo4 busbars for heat discoloration or loose hardware. Everything was cool and tight, but that inspection reassured me that the high-current connections were sound. I now glance at terminal temperature and error history once a week rather than waiting for surprise.
Overall, the biggest benefit is not total independence; it is predictable use of my own solar power. I still pull from the grid in winter, but the battery has made peak rates far less painful.
