I installed a 10-kWh lifepo4 battery system beside my inverter last spring, mainly to stop sending cheap midday solar power back to the grid and buying it back during expensive evening hours. The installation took most of a Saturday. My electrician mounted the battery on a concrete wall, connected the solar panels, and added a simple monitoring app. Nothing about the setup felt glamorous, but the wiring was tidy and the app started showing charge levels before dinner.
Before the battery, my house routinely pulled from the grid around 5:30 when rates jumped. Now the panels usually fill the battery by mid-afternoon. At dinner time, my induction cooktop, refrigerator, and lights run from stored solar energy instead. On sunny days, my evening grid use is almost zero. My monthly bill fell from about $180 to $95 on average, although winter bills still climb because of shorter days and electric heating. The bigger surprise was how calm I felt watching the battery app during a power outage.
I did have one minor troubleshooting moment. One morning, the battery showed 0% even though the previous day had been bright and sunny. I checked the inverter and found the system had switched into backup reserve mode after a brief overnight outage. The app did not make that obvious; it simply looked like the battery had failed. A quick call to my installer confirmed the reserve setting was too conservative for my usage. After raising it from 20% to 10%, the battery charged normally again. I appreciated that the fix was a setting, not a replacement part.
For me, the best feature is not the headline capacity; it is shifting daily consumption. This has made solar power feel practical rather than experimental. I check battery charge weekly, but I rarely think about it now.
