I installed a lifep04 100ah battery beside my inverter last spring, after getting tired of watching daytime solar power disappear back into the grid. My system is modest: twenty-four panels and a 5kW hybrid inverter, powering a house with a refrigerator, well pump, lights, and my home office.
The biggest difference has been during peak hours. Before adding the battery, my utility bill climbed in the evening even though the panels produced plenty during the day. Now the battery charges from solar around lunchtime and carries the house from 4:00 p.m. until bedtime. I usually set the inverter to reserve twenty percent, so I have a little backup if the power flickers overnight.
The savings are not dramatic every month, but they are real. My highest previous bill was $238; this summer, with similar air-conditioning use, the highest was $156. Months are around $70–$100 lower than last year. I also notice fewer inverter warnings because the battery smooths out the sudden evening load from the well pump and kitchen appliances.
I did have one small troubleshooting scare. After a cloudy weekend, the state of charge showed 3% even though the battery had been reserved at 20%. I checked the monitoring app and found a loose communication cable between the battery and inverter. After reseating it, the reading returned to normal within minutes. That was a useful reminder that storage systems still need attention; it was not a mysterious battery failure.
After nine months, the lifep04 100ah battery still holds enough capacity for my evening routine, and I have not noticed a drop in performance. I like seeing the battery monitor charge from clean solar rather than buying as much peak electricity. For my household, the best part is simple: more of the solar energy I generate actually gets used at home.
