Every evening, I used to wait until the utility bill arrived before knowing how much our solar panels had really saved us. Now, with a 10-kWh lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) battery in the garage, I notice the difference every day.
Our household usually generates more solar power than we need between late morning and mid-afternoon. Instead of sending that excess electricity back to the grid for a modest credit, the solar battery stores it. After sunset, it runs the refrigerator, Wi-Fi, lights, and my home office monitor. The biggest improvement comes between 4 p.m. and 9 p.m., when our utility charges peak rates. The battery automatically discharges during those hours, and our evening consumption from the grid has fallen noticeably.
Before installation, our monthly electricity bills averaged around $180 during summer. Last August, despite running the air conditioner regularly, the bill was $104. It is not a miracle—our weather and solar production vary—but the peak-hour savings are genuinely visible. We also programmed a 20% reserve, so the system keeps some energy for outages rather than draining completely.
I did have one small troubleshooting moment. One morning, the monitoring app showed the battery at 2% even though the sun was already up. I discovered the inverter had switched to backup mode after a brief overnight outage. Restarting the inverter and updating its firmware fixed the display, and the battery began charging normally. The installer answered my call quickly, but I appreciated that the basic reset was simple enough to handle myself.
I had considered cheaper lead acid batteries, but their shorter cycle life, heavier cabinets, and maintenance requirements did not suit our limited garage space. The lithium battery has been quiet, clean, and practically invisible in daily life. I still check the state of charge and monthly savings in the app.
