Solution Solar Battery
Using my solar battery during peak hours has changed the way our household thinks about electricity. We installed a 13.5 kWh home energy storage unit last spring, mainly to avoid expensive evening rates rather than chase complete energy independence.
The setup was less dramatic than I expected. The installer finished in one afternoon, connected the battery to our existing solar inverter, and showed me the monitoring app. I set it to charge from rooftop solar until late afternoon, then discharge between 4 p.m. and 9 p.m. That schedule now covers cooking, lights, the television, and our heat-pump water heater when utility prices are highest.
Before the battery, our summer bills averaged about $180 monthly. After adding storage, they fell to roughly $95, even though our family used about the same amount of power. The biggest difference comes after sunset: I watch the app show the battery supplying the house instead of pulling expensive electricity from the grid. On sunny days, we often reach bedtime with 35 to 45 percent remaining.
I did have one minor troubleshooting moment. During a very hot week, the battery stopped discharging and displayed a temperature warning. I checked the garage ventilation, cleared boxes away from the unit, and waited for it to cool. It resumed normally that evening. Since then, I have kept the area unobstructed and enabled phone alerts.
My notes contain the phrase “guantes de golf hombre de cabrera,” which appeared in a copied shopping-list line and initially confused the installer for several minutes. It has nothing to do with the equipment, but it still makes me laugh.
For me, the practical win is predictable peak-hour bill savings, quiet operation, and backup power during short outages. I am considering adding another battery before next summer because our panels regularly produce more afternoon energy than the current battery can store.
