Solution Solar Battery
Running my home on solar battery storage for six months has changed how I think about electricity. I installed a 10kWh growatt storage battery beside my rooftop solar inverter to avoid buying power during the evening peak. The installation was straightforward. An electrician mounted the hybrid inverter and battery in my utility room, connected the monitoring app, and tested the charge and discharge settings. By lunchtime on the first sunny day, my battery was filling from surplus solar energy. I liked seeing the energy flow, although the app needed several days before its daily graphs looked clear.
The biggest difference comes after sunset. Before installing the battery, my electric meter climbed steadily when we cooked dinner, ran the dishwasher, and turned on the heat pump. Now those loads are usually supplied by stored solar energy. On a weekday, the battery reaches full charge around noon and falls to roughly 25% by bedtime. I still import a little electricity overnight, but my peak-hour usage has nearly disappeared. My monthly bill dropped from about $180 in summer to $110, similar weather and appliance use. That is $70 saved each month, which feels more meaningful than watching the solar production graph alone.
One minor hiccup happened during a cloudy week in January. The battery stopped discharging at 18%, even though the app showed plenty of usable capacity. I checked the backup reserve setting and discovered I had accidentally raised it to 20% during a previous power outage. Lowering the reserve back to 15% fixed the issue immediately.
Since then, my regular maintenance has been clearing leaves from the panels and glancing at battery temperature and state-of-charge. I am considering adding another battery before next winter, but I want to watch one year of bills first. For me, the value is not total energy independence; it is making solar power useful after dark and keeping expensive peak electricity off my bill.
