Solution Solar Battery DIY Parts
3:10 a.m. is when I usually notice whether our solar battery was worth the money. The house is quiet, the grid is expensive, and the inverter is quietly feeding our refrigerator, router, and a few lights.
We installed a 10 kWh lithium battery last spring, mainly to avoid peak-hour electricity rates. Our rooftop panels charge it through the afternoon, then the battery takes over around 4 p.m., when cooking and air-conditioning start pulling hardest.
On sunny weekdays, this has changed our evening bill more than I expected. Before storage, we regularly saw expensive demand between five and nine. Now the meter barely moves during those hours, except when we run the oven and dryer together.
The biggest surprise was how much the small habits matter. I set the dishwasher to run after lunch, let the battery reach its reserve, and keep a 20 percent backup level for outages. That reserve has already been useful twice.
During a storm in November, the power blinked off while I was working from home. The lights flickered, but the battery backup switched over so quickly that my monitor stayed on. I did not need to start a generator or reset the refrigerator.
My setup uses a 230v inverter, and the installation was less intimidating than I had imagined. The electrician labeled the isolator, battery breaker, and essential-loads circuit clearly, which made later checks much easier.
I did have one minor troubleshooting moment. After a firmware update, the monitoring app showed the battery at 100 percent all afternoon, even though solar production was low. I checked the physical display, restarted the gateway, and contacted support.
They explained the app had cached old data, not that charging had failed. Since then I check both screens occasionally, and the readings have matched every time during normal operation.
