Running my home battery through two summer months has changed the way I think about electricity. Before installation, my solar panels sent most of their afternoon production back to the grid, while I bought expensive power after dinner. The battery has made that pattern much less frustrating.
Installation itself was fairly straightforward. The installer mounted a 10kWh lithium iron phosphate battery in my garage and connected it to my existing rooftop solar inverter. It took most of a morning, although waiting for the utility approval was the slower part. I specifically chose a growatt smart meter compatible battery because I wanted automatic monitoring of household consumption rather than manually setting charge times.
The smart meter now watches incoming solar and household demand, so the battery charges around midday and discharges when my usage rises.
The biggest difference shows up during peak hours. Our utility charges more from 4 to 9 p.m., exactly when we cook dinner, run the dishwasher, and use lights. Instead of pulling from the grid, we now run mostly on stored solar energy. On clear days, the app usually shows the battery reaching full by about 1 p.m. By bedtime, it is often around 35 percent, which is enough to cover the early morning refrigerator, Wi-Fi, and coffee maker load before the panels wake up.
That shift has cut my evening grid use noticeably. My monthly bills were typically about $180 in summer; lately they average closer to $115, depending on air conditioning. I am not pretending the battery pays for itself overnight, but saving roughly $60 to $70 each month feels meaningful, especially because I am using more of my own solar power instead of selling it cheaply.
One morning, it stopped discharging; restarting the gateway fixed it.
