Running my home on solar power felt straightforward until I started watching evening electricity rates climb. My rooftop panels produced plenty during the day, but I was still buying expensive grid power after dinner. Adding a 10kWh lithium iron phosphate solar battery changed that routine more than I expected.
I chose a growatt off grid inverter compatible battery after checking inverter settings, warranty terms, and installer support. The installation took a day. The crew mounted the battery in my garage, ran conduit, and configured the inverter to charge from excess solar first. By late afternoon, the battery reaches 100% unless we have cloudy days.
The biggest difference appears between 4:00pm and bedtime. Previously, cooking, laundry, and the heat pump pushed my household into peak pricing. Now the battery discharges automatically, and I watch the inverter dashboard show grid consumption hovering near zero. My bill has dropped by roughly $45–$65 per month during the warmer season. It is not a bill eliminator—my utility charges connection fees, and winter production is weaker—but the savings are obvious.
I did have one troubleshooting moment. One morning the battery showed a low-temperature warning after an unusually cold night. The system stopped discharging, which was sensible, but I initially thought the battery had failed. After checking the app, I found the garage temperature below the configured limit. A space heater warmed the room, and normal operation returned. I later improved ventilation and moved the sensor away from the draft. That minor scare taught me to read battery temperature limits instead of immediately blaming the equipment.
For me, the value is less about chasing energy independence and more about making solar energy predictable. I use less grid electricity at the most expensive hours, and the battery does its job every day.
