Running my growatt 8 kw solar battery for six months, I have noticed the biggest difference during the evening peak period. Before installation, our electric meter seemed to race after dinner: cooking, laundry, heat-pump, and an occasional electric-vehicle charge all landed in the expensive hours. Now the battery stores excess solar at midday and supplies most of our home from about 4 p.m. until bedtime.
The practical saving has been more satisfying than the headline capacity. Our utility’s peak rate is roughly 31 cents per kWh, compared with 14 cents off-peak. In a typical clear month, the battery discharges 9–12 kWh on weekdays, cutting my evening purchases by around $45 to $60. It does not eliminate the bill—we still pay connection charges and buy grid power through cloudy stretches—but our monthly total fell from about $190 last summer to $125–$140. I can see the difference on the bill, not just on an app graph.
Setup was straightforward, though I learned one useful lesson. During the first week, the battery stopped discharging at 20 percent state of charge even when the house was drawing power. The installer explained that the backup reserve had been set conservatively, so I changed the reserve to 10 percent after checking the manufacturer’s guidance. Since then, it has used more of the usable battery capacity without hitting zero.
The inverter makes a soft hum, but I barely notice it in the garage, and there has been no maintenance beyond checking the monitoring app. On rainy days, I let the system charge from the grid overnight only when the tariff makes that worthwhile. For my household, solar self-consumption and peak shaving matter more than chasing energy independence. The battery has not made electricity free, but it has made our energy costs far more predictable.
