Running my solar battery system through a full year has changed the way I think about electricity at home.
I installed a 10kWh lithium iron phosphate battery alongside a growatt 3 phase hybrid inverter, and the biggest win has been using stored solar during expensive evening hours. Before the battery, our heat pump, cooking, and laundry often pushed us into peak pricing after dinner.
Now the panels charge the battery in the afternoon, and the inverter automatically switches to battery power when grid rates rise. My daily bill savings are not dramatic in winter, when cloudy days leave little surplus, but from April through September I usually save about two to four dollars a day. That adds up to roughly $70–$100 per month during the sunny season, which feels worthwhile even after allowing for the battery payment.
The battery also gives me a quieter kind of security. During a couple of short outages, it kept the refrigerator, modem, and a few lights running without any noticeable interruption.
I did have one minor troubleshooting moment in January. The battery stopped discharging overnight, despite showing a healthy state of charge. The monitoring app showed grid priority had been selected after a firmware update. I changed the setting back to self-consumption mode, and normal operation returned immediately. That taught me not to assume a hardware failure before checking the operating mode and event log.
I now glance at the app every few days, but I rarely change anything. On sunny weekends, I sometimes run the dishwasher and washing machine together at midday, when solar production is covering the house and the battery is already near full. That simple habit has made our self-consumption noticeably higher than it was before. It has been predictable, quiet, and genuinely useful at home.
