After months with my rooftop solar battery, I stopped watching the electricity meter every evening. My goal was use stored solar power during expensive peak hours instead of buying it from the grid.
The installation was less dramatic than I expected. The installer mounted a 10 kWh lithium iron phosphate battery beside the inverter in our garage, connected the solar panels, and programmed a time-of-use schedule. I chose “ganfeng” mode in the app, which shifts charging and discharging around the utility’s peak pricing. That setting has become the part of the system.
On days, the battery fills by afternoon. At 4 p.m., when our rate jumps, it starts feeding the refrigerator, heat pump, Wi-Fi, and cooking appliances. Before storage, our evening consumption cost about $3 to $4. Now it is usually under a dollar, sometimes just the connection charge. My monthly bill dropped from $180 to $75. That is not a perfect comparison because rates changed, but the battery clearly made the biggest difference.
I did have one scare. During a cloudy week, the battery reached 12%, and the app showed “backup reserve unavailable.” I assumed something had failed. A reboot of the monitoring gateway fixed the display, while the battery continued operating normally. Customer support confirmed it was a communication glitch, not a storage problem.
I still keep the reserve at 20% for outages, so I do not squeeze every last kilowatt-hour from it. The automatic switching is what I appreciate most; there is no daily effort beyond checking the battery state once in a while. For my household, solar self-consumption and lower peak-hour usage have made the investment feel practical, not futuristic. I would size the battery carefully next time, because winter clouds expose its limits. Still, seeing the meter barely move at dinner time is genuinely satisfying.
