Over the past six months, my solar battery has changed how I think about electricity bills. I installed a 10kWh lithium iron phosphate storage unit alongside my rooftop solar, mainly to avoid buying power during the evening peak. Before that, my panels produced plenty at lunchtime, but we still paid the highest rates after dinner. Now the battery charges from surplus solar, then runs the refrigerator, lights, Wi-Fi, and sometimes the dishwasher after 4pm.

During the first full billing cycle, my peak-hour usage dropped noticeably. My bill went from about $142 to $96. At current utility rates, my battery saves roughly $35–$50 monthly, depending on cloudy weather and how much cooking we do. It is not magic—on rainy days, I still pull from the grid, and I do not pretend the battery eliminates every bill. Still, the consistency is satisfying, especially when I can see evening consumption covered at zero cents on the monitoring app.

I did have one small scare last month. The battery stopped discharging just after sunset. The app showed it was in standby, even though the charge level was 68%. I checked the breaker and found the backup circuit had tripped after I plugged in a portable heater. Resetting it fixed everything, but I learned not to run that heater from the same protected circuit. The installer had explained the load limit, but I clearly needed the practical reminder.

My setup also includes a cobra power inverter, which works with the battery and solar array. I was nervous about complicated settings, yet the default time-of-use schedule was nearly right. I adjusted the reserve level to 25% so there is still backup power for outages. We have only lost grid service once since installation, for around two hours, and the refrigerator never blinked during that outage.
