Having a home battery has changed the way I use my solar system, especially during the evening peak period. Before adding storage, my panels produced plenty of power during the day, but I still bought expensive electricity after sunset. I installed a 10 kWh LiFePO4 battery last spring, and it now handles most of our evening demand.

On a typical sunny day, the solar panels run the refrigerator, washing machine, and water heater first. Once the house is covered, the surplus charges the battery. Around 5 p.m., the battery begins supplying power as the utility rate rises. It usually carries us through dinner, lighting, television, and the dishwasher until about 10:30 p.m. That timing has made the biggest difference to our electricity bill.

Our monthly bill dropped by roughly 30 to 40 percent, depending on the weather. We still pay a small connection charge and buy power during cloudy stretches, but avoiding those peak-hour rates is where the savings really show. I originally searched for a cheap lifepo4 battery, but I decided that dependable battery management software and a solid warranty mattered more than the lowest purchase price.

The one frustrating moment happened during a week of heavy rain. The battery reached its reserve level earlier than expected, and the inverter switched back to grid power. I first thought something had failed, but the system was simply protecting the battery from excessive discharge. I raised the backup reserve from 15 to 25 percent, and the problem disappeared.

I also like having backup power during short outages. It does not run every large appliance indefinitely, but it keeps the modem, lights, refrigerator, and a few outlets working without interruption. After several months, my main advice is to match battery capacity to your evening usage rather than buying the biggest solar battery available. Good monitoring, sensible reserve settings, and enough daily solar generation have made my setup practical and predictable.
