After six months of watching our rooftop solar panels send excess electricity back to the grid, I finally installed an energy storage system built around a calb battery. The main reason was simple: our evening usage kept climbing just when utility rates jumped.
The installation itself was less dramatic than I expected. The installer mounted the battery in the garage, connected it to the inverter, and walked me through the monitoring app. I chose a schedule that charges from midday solar production and discharges after dinner. That timing has made the biggest difference.
Before installation, our panels often produced more than we could use. Now the battery usually reaches full by early afternoon. Around 5:30, it starts powering the refrigerator, lights, router, and heat-pump water heater. We still use grid electricity occasionally, but peak-hour consumption has dropped sharply.
My bills are not magically zero, but the change is obvious. In the first full month, our imported energy during expensive hours fell from roughly 280 kilowatt-hours to 70. The bill decreased by about $58, even though our household usage stayed similar. The savings vary with cloudy weather and winter heating, yet battery backup means I no longer feel like I am giving away free midday solar power.
One troubleshooting moment happened during a firmware update. The app showed the battery offline, and the system stopped discharging that evening. I checked the breaker, power-cycled the communications gateway, and waited ten minutes. It came back online without losing energy. The installer later explained that the update had restarted the monitoring connection. I appreciated finding that out before a storm, because the battery backup function is the feature I care about most.
At this point, I watch the app less obsessively. I mainly notice the quieter meter, lower evening bills, and more confidence that our solar investment is working at home.
