Solution Solar Battery
After installing my solar battery storage system last spring, I expected fewer outages. Instead, the biggest surprise has been how much calmer our evenings feel.
My setup is modest: a rooftop solar array, an inverter, and a battery bank built around a battery2volt1000ah unit. I chose that capacity because our home uses about 8–10 kWh after sunset, mostly the refrigerator, Wi-Fi, lights, and a small heat pump. I wanted practical solar energy storage, not a huge whole-home system.
Installation took an electrician a day. The battery was wall-mounted in our utility room, with space around it. The frustrating part was getting the inverter and battery management system to communicate. A firmware update fixed it, but I spent a weekend checking cables and restarting the gateway. Once connected, the solar battery charged reliably during daylight hours.
The real win appears during peak hours, from 4:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., when my utility charges higher rates. I set the system to charge from solar first, then discharge during that window. Before storage, my average summer bill was about $210. After adding the battery, it fell to around $125, although our electricity use barely changed. That is roughly $85 saved each month, and the difference is obvious on the bill.
During a two-hour outage, the battery kept refrigerator, modem, lights, and office running without a flicker. I did not switch anything manually. The app showed the state of charge dropping from 86% to 63%, giving me confidence in the battery backup.
I did learn one minor lesson. I initially set the backup reserve at 10%. On cloudy days, the system reached that limit before dawn, so the grid took over sooner than I liked. I raised the reserve to 25%. Now the system still saves money while leaving a safety margin.
