After living with rooftop solar for two summers, I finally added a home battery last autumn, mainly to stop buying expensive evening electricity. My installer recommended a 10 kWh lithium iron phosphate pack, and I specifically searched for the phrase “baterie lifepo4” while comparing models online.
The physical installation was less dramatic than I expected: the technician mounted the battery beside my inverter, ran a short cable through the garage wall, and finished testing before lunch. The app setup took longer than the hardware. I had to reconnect the Wi-Fi twice, and the first firmware update made the state-of-charge display freeze at 62%. A power cycle fixed it, thankfully.
Since then, I have watched the battery closely during peak hours. On sunny days, my panels fill the battery by about 2:30 p.m., so the system automatically waits until evening. Between 4 and 9 p.m., it powers our refrigerator, lights, television, and induction cooktop instead of pulling from the grid.
That shift has made the clearest difference on my bill. Before the battery, I often saw 18-to-20-euro bills in months when we used air conditioning after sunset. Now those same months land around 7 to 9 euros, despite similar household habits. The savings are not theoretical: I can see the discharge curve and daily imported energy in the monitoring app.
One minor annoyance appeared during a cloudy week. The battery reached 15% reserve and refused to discharge further, although the app showed a warning I did not immediately understand. I called support, and they explained that the backup reserve was protecting the cells from deep discharge. I lowered the reserve to 10% for normal days but kept 20% before a forecast storm. That adjustment restored normal evening operation and taught me to leave headroom rather than chase every last kilowatt-hour.
