Keeping my solar battery system fairly simple was more valuable than chasing the biggest possible setup. I wanted to use less grid electricity after sunset, especially during our expensive evening peak period. The main pieces are a 10kWh lithium iron phosphate battery, rooftop solar panels, and an 8kw hybrid inverter that manages charging and backup automatically.
Installation took most of a day. The electrician mounted the battery in our garage, ran a new cable to the inverter, and walked me through the monitoring app. I appreciated that he explained the settings instead of simply leaving everything at default. We set the battery to charge mainly from surplus daytime solar and discharge between 4 and 9 p.m. That schedule matches our household better than a complicated tariff strategy.
The noticeable difference came on the first full month. Our evening cooking, laundry, lights, and heat-pump use were supplied mostly by stored solar energy instead of the grid. Our electricity bill dropped from roughly $186 to $78, although weather and rates vary. That is about $108 saved in one month, which feels more real than watching a chart showing kilowatt-hours. On cloudy days, the battery still reduced our peak-hour consumption, but I stopped expecting total independence from the grid.
One evening I noticed the battery had not discharged even though the app showed plenty of stored power. The inverter displayed a backup reserve setting of 30 percent, and our usage had not crossed it. I had misunderstood that reserve as an emergency-only level; it was actually the minimum state of charge the system would protect. After lowering it to 15 percent through the installer menu, the battery began covering normal evening demand again. I kept the higher reserve during storm season, since short outages matter more to me than squeezing out every possible dollar.
