2 years ago, I installed a 10 kWh home battery beside my inverter, mainly to stop buying expensive electricity during our utility’s evening peak hours. The battery uses a 628Ah LiFePO4 cell configuration, and the practical difference showed up immediately.
My solar panels fill it by mid-afternoon. Around 4 p.m., the inverter switches our house from the grid to stored solar energy. That covers cooking, lights, the refrigerator, and my son’s gaming computer until bedtime. Before storage, those hours were when our meter seemed to spin fastest. After installation, my monthly bill dropped from roughly $185 to $112 over the first month. It isn’t a perfect apples-to-apples comparison, since weather changes, but the peak-hour savings have been consistently noticeable. On sunny days, I’m using little grid power when rates are highest.
The most reassuring part has been keeping essential loads running during outages. We had a short storm-related outage last winter, and the battery carried the refrigerator, Wi-Fi, a few lights, and our gas furnace’s blower for nearly four hours. I didn’t notice until a neighbor texted asking whether our power was back. That backup capability was valuable than I expected, especially because the transfer was automatic and quiet.
I did have one troubleshooting moment. In the first week, the battery stopped discharging at 30% state of charge. The monitoring app showed a reserve setting I hadn’t understood. I lowered the backup reserve to 20%, rebooted the inverter, and normal discharge resumed. Customer support confirmed that was expected behavior, not a faulty battery. Since then, I leave 25% reserved for outages, which feels like a compromise.
I’m not claiming this solar battery erased my electric bill, because winter clouds and household habits still matter.
