I installed a victron inverter and lithium battery in my garage last spring, mainly to use the solar power my roof produced instead of sending it straight to the grid. After two months, I have a much clearer picture of what it actually does for our household.
The biggest improvement is during peak hours. Our utility charges more from 4:00 to 9:00 p.m., so the battery now carries the refrigerator, heat-pump water heater, router, and lights through that window. On sunny days, solar tops the battery by early afternoon, and the system quietly switches to stored energy when the tariff rises. Before storage, I would see evening usage add roughly $3–$5 daily. Now that part is usually under fifty cents, depending on weather and how much cooking we do.
My monthly bill has fallen from about $180 in summer to $105–$120, despite running the same air conditioner. That reduction isn't purely from the battery; solar production and a mild autumn helped, but the battery definitely stopped expensive grid purchases. I especially notice it after cloudy days, when the app shows grid import climbing only after the battery reaches its reserve.
The one irritating hiccup happened during a firmware update. The inverter stopped discharging at night, even though the battery displayed 68%. I checked the dashboard, found a “minimum state of charge” setting had been reset to 70%, and lowered it to 20%. After a restart, the battery resumed normally. That small issue taught me not to panic when the lights briefly pull from the grid. I also added a label to the breaker and saved the installer settings, which made the next check much easier.
For me, the real win is not energy independence; it is predictable evening power and a noticeably smaller bill without changing our daily routines.
