Using the sun 12k sg01lp3 battery for the past eight months has changed how I think about our electricity bill. Before installation, our grid meter seemed to run fastest between 4 and 9 p.m., when dinner, laundry, and the heat pump all competed for power. Now the battery stores our rooftop solar during the afternoon and carries most of that evening load.
The difference is easiest to see on peak-rate days. Our utility charges roughly 31 cents per kWh during peak hours, compared with 14 cents overnight. I usually come home to find the battery around 70 percent, and I set it to discharge from 4 p.m. until bedtime. We use about 8 to 10 kWh from storage on a normal evening. That has lowered our monthly bill by approximately $55 to $75, depending on the weather and how much cooking we do. It is not a dramatic “zero bill” situation, but the savings are steady and real.
My only irritating moment happened in the first month. The inverter stopped discharging because its reserve setting had somehow been raised to 40 percent. I initially thought the solar battery was faulty. After checking the app and lowering the backup reserve to 20 percent, it worked normally again. I now keep that reserve for outages and avoid changing settings casually.
The app is simple enough for checking battery state of charge, solar production, and grid consumption without standing in the garage. During a short outage, the backup power switched over faster than I noticed, keeping the refrigerator, internet router, and a few lights running. I still treat the battery as a practical bill-saving tool rather than a magic appliance. For our home, peak-hour shifting has been the most worthwhile feature, and the system has made our solar panels more useful after sunset.
