I installed a 10-kWh lithium iron phosphate lfp battery system last spring, mainly to stop buying so much electricity during peak hours. My rooftop solar panels already covered most daytime use, but by 4:00 p.m. the house was still drawing power from the grid. The battery changed that routine immediately.
Setup was less intimidating than I expected. The installer mounted the battery in my garage, connected it to the inverter, and configured a backup reserve of 25%. I chose that setting because we get occasional winter outages, and I wanted enough stored energy for the refrigerator, internet router, and furnace controls. The app showed solar production, battery state of charge, and household consumption without being overly complicated. After watching it for a few days, I stopped checking every hour.
The biggest practical difference appears between 4:00 and 9:00 p.m. Once the sun goes down, the battery automatically takes over instead of letting expensive grid electricity run the oven, lights, television, and heat pump. Before installation, my winter electric bills averaged around $210. With the battery and similar weather, they have landed closer to $135, although I know rates and usage vary. The savings are most obvious on cloudy days, because I can store cheaper midday solar energy rather than export it for a small credit.
I did have one small scare: one morning the app showed the battery at 0% even though it had been near 60% the night before. I found the system had switched into backup mode after a brief grid flicker. The battery was fine; restarting the inverter cleared the warning, and the installer later adjusted its outage sensitivity. Since then, it has worked quietly in the background. For me, the win is not energy independence; it is predictable evening power and a lower bill.
