I installed my battery storage system last spring, mainly to stop buying expensive electricity from the grid after sunset. My setup is fairly modest: rooftop solar, a hybrid inverter, and a 5kWh battery bank built around lifepo4 eve 105ah cells. I did most of the installation myself, although an electrician checked the final connections and settings.
The biggest difference is what happens between 4:00pm and 9:00pm. On sunny days, the panels usually fill the battery by late afternoon, and the house runs from stored power through dinner and bedtime. I deliberately shifted my dishwasher and washing machine to the afternoon, so the battery could cover the refrigerator, lights, router, and television later. Before storage, that evening window was when my meter seemed to spin fastest. Now, I only import a small amount when cooking with the induction hob or using the kettle.
My bills are not magically zero, but the change is easy to see. In the first full month, my evening usage fell from roughly 260 kWh to 80, and the bill dropped by about $42, depending on the weather and rates. The following month was cloudier, so savings were closer to $30, but that still paid for a useful portion of the battery. I watch the utility app and inverter display, but I care more about the monthly total than perfect daily predictions.
I did have one mildly annoying moment during the first hot week. The battery stopped discharging at 52%, and the app showed a communication warning. I power-cycled the inverter, checked the cable between the battery and monitor, and found a loose data plug that I had not fully seated. After reconnecting it, the system resumed normally. That small problem was a useful reminder that storage is not completely set-and-forget for our family every single day.
