Finally having a home battery changed how I use my solar panels. Before installing a 10 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) storage unit, I sent most afternoon generation straight back to the grid. That felt especially wasteful because my evening electricity use starts when solar production is already falling.

The installer mounted the inverter and battery in my garage in one day, and the commissioning was less dramatic than I expected. We checked the battery monitor, set a 20% reserve, and selected time-of-use charging. I did spend an evening watching the app instead of television, mostly because I wanted to understand the settings. The terminology was new to me; even searching "lfp cell voltage" made me realize how much battery management happens invisibly during normal operation.

The biggest difference appears between 4 p.m. and 9 p.m. Before, my utility meter climbed quickly when cooking, running the dishwasher, and using lights. Now the battery supplies those loads after sunset. My monthly bill dropped from roughly $185 to $92 over the first full month. It wasn't a perfect comparison, since weather changes, but the reduction was obvious. On sunny days, I finish charging by early afternoon and still have about 45% left at bedtime. On cloudy days, the system switches to grid power sooner, but the battery still trims the expensive peak hours.

My one real hiccup happened during a heat wave. The battery stopped discharging at 6 p.m., even though the app showed plenty of stored energy. I initially blamed the inverter, then noticed the garage temperature had crossed the protection limit. After improving ventilation and lowering the discharge current, it returned to normal the next day.

That issue taught me to respect operating limits. I check state of charge weekly and keep everything clear. Storage makes my solar investment useful daily.
