Relying on the grid used to feel unavoidable in my house, especially after dinner when electricity rates climbed. Last spring, I added a 10kWh solar battery alongside my existing panels and growatt inverter hybrid system. The main reason was simple: use my own solar power after sunset instead of buying it during peak hours.
The installation was less disruptive than I expected. The installer mounted the battery in my garage, close to the inverter, and spent most of the afternoon checking cable runs, settings, and backup behavior. I specifically asked for the battery to charge from solar first, then discharge after 4 p.m. That schedule has worked well for our routine.
On a normal sunny day, the battery reaches roughly 90 percent by early afternoon. It then runs the refrigerator, Wi-Fi equipment, lights, and sometimes the dishwasher through the expensive evening window. Before storage, my evening grid use averaged about 8 kWh. Now, it is usually closer to 2 kWh, unless we cook a large meal or run the heat pump. My utility bill has dropped by around $45 to $65 per month, depending on weather. That feels more meaningful than watching solar production numbers climb, because I can see the difference on the statement.
One small issue appeared during a week of cloudy weather. The battery stopped discharging at about 30 percent, even though I had set a lower reserve. I initially assumed the solar battery was failing, but the monitoring app showed a backup protection setting had been enabled after a firmware update. The installer talked me through switching it back, and normal discharge resumed that evening. I now check the battery state of charge and inverter alerts once or twice a week, not obsessively.
For me, predictable evening savings make the solar battery worthwhile, even before full payback.
