Replacing our aging lead-acid backup batteries with a lithium solar battery system has changed how I use the power from my rooftop panels. I installed a growatt 20 kw inverter 48V Battery in the garage last spring, after getting tired of watching evening electricity prices eat into the savings. The installation was less dramatic than I expected. My electrician mounted the inverter beside the existing breaker panel, added proper fuses and disconnects, and configured the battery to charge during the day. We spent most of the afternoon checking cable sizes, settings, and the monitoring app rather than wrestling with hardware.
Once connected, I set the battery reserve at 20%, so it would not drain completely during a long outage. The app shows solar production, battery state of charge, household consumption, and grid import in one fairly clear screen.
On sunny days, the panels fill the battery by early afternoon. Instead of buying power during our utility’s 4-to-9-p.m. peak window, I run the refrigerator, heat pump, lights, and cooking appliances from stored energy. My first full bill after switching was about $62 lower than the same month the previous year, despite similar weather. Typical savings are closer to $35–$50 monthly, but that still feels worthwhile.
One evening the battery stopped discharging at 31%. The app showed a warning about low temperature, and I initially thought the inverter had failed. After checking the garage, I found the battery temperature had fallen below its configured cutoff. I raised the minimum charge temperature slightly and added a small insulated enclosure around the battery (without blocking ventilation). It has behaved normally since then.
That small scare taught me to read the battery settings instead of blindly trusting the dashboard. Overall, the storage battery has made my solar setup more predictable, and quieter.
