I installed a 10kWh lithium iron phosphate battery beside my garage inverter last spring, and the biggest surprise was how quickly it changed our evenings.
Before storage, our solar panels exported most of their midday production for a small credit. At dinner time, we pulled expensive grid electricity for cooking, washing clothes, and running the heat pump. Now the battery charges from solar after breakfast and covers nearly everything until midnight. On sunny days, the inverter usually shows 80–95% charge by late afternoon, and I deliberately save a little capacity for the 4–9 p.m. peak window.
That scheduling has made the clearest difference on my bill. My utility’s peak rate is almost three times the overnight rate, so I set the battery to discharge during those hours. Our average monthly electricity bill fell from about $185 to $112, despite similar usage. In July, with long sunny days, it dipped below $90. I am not claiming total energy independence—we still buy power during cloudy stretches and winter—but the solar battery has noticeably reduced our peak purchases.
I did have one small troubleshooting moment. One morning the battery was at 18% instead of the 45% backup reserve I had set. The monitoring app showed “standby,” although the panels were producing. I checked the breaker, rebooted the communications dongle, and discovered a firmware update had paused charging. After installing it, the system recovered within ten minutes. I also learned not to confuse a diy lithium battery charger with a properly configured solar charge controller; charging settings and battery safety limits matter.
What I appreciate most is the quiet, automatic operation. I rarely touch it now, except checking the state of charge before a storm. The battery has not eliminated my bill, but it has made our solar investment useful.
