Solution Solar Battery
I installed a solar battery storage system last spring, mainly to stop buying expensive evening electricity from the grid. My setup pairs 3.6 kW of rooftop panels with a 10 kWh bigblue lifepo4 battery and a hybrid inverter. I did the installation with an electrician, but I handled the wall mounting and cable labeling myself. The instructions were straightforward, although lifting the battery into place took two people. Once the app was connected, I set the battery to charge from solar first and discharge between 4 and 10 p.m., when my utility charges the highest rate.
The biggest difference showed up on ordinary sunny weekdays. Before adding storage, our evening usage pushed the bill to around $180 monthly. Now the battery usually covers the dishwasher, refrigerator, Wi-Fi, lights, and television after sunset. My last bill was $112, despite running the air conditioner several nights. That is roughly $68 saved, though I know weather and habits make the number fluctuate. Watching the battery state of charge climb during the day and fall during peak hours has become oddly satisfying.
My favorite practical feature is the backup power. We had one short outage during a storm, and the lights barely flickered. The inverter switched over automatically, keeping our internet router, freezer, and a few lamps running. I did notice one quirk: on a cloudy day, the battery reached its reserve setting earlier than expected. I reduced the backup reserve from 30 percent to 20 percent and changed the app's load priority, which fixed the behavior without a service call.
I still check connections every few months and keep the battery area dry and cool. For me, solar self-consumption matters more than chasing complete energy independence. The system has not eliminated my electric bill, but it has made peak-rate electricity much less painful.
