After adding a 10-kWh home battery to my rooftop solar system last spring, I stopped thinking of electricity as something wasted.

Before the installation, my panels produced plenty at midday, but I was still buying power every evening when cooking, running the dishwasher, and charging our car. The battery changed that routine more than I expected. It charges from excess solar during the afternoon, then automatically discharges after 4 p.m., when our utility rate jumps from about €0.18/kWh to €0.32. On a sunny day, I use 7–8 kWh from stored energy during the evening, saving €1.00 to €1.30 per day during the months when rates are highest. That works out to around €30 a month.

The practical benefit is not just the bill. Our solar battery keeps the fridge and Wi-Fi running through outages, although it does not replace a generator for heavy loads. I can see the battery state of charge in the app, but I leave the settings alone.

I did have one small troubleshooting moment in July. The system showed a low-temperature warning, even though the garage felt comfortable. I checked the inverter and found a ventilation fan partly blocked by dust. After switching the system off, I cleaned the filter and restarted it; the warning disappeared and the battery resumed charging. Since then, I vacuum around the equipment every few months and keep the area clear.
