8 months ago, I installed a 48volt 10kw lithium solar battery in my garage, mainly to stop buying expensive evening electricity from the grid. My rooftop solar already covered most daytime use, but the old net-metering credit was not generous enough to make exporting power worthwhile. Now the battery charges between late morning and early afternoon, then runs the house after dinner.
Before storage, my bill averaged around $145 in summer and $110 in cooler months. Over the last three summer bills, I've paid between $88 and $101, depending on air-conditioning use. That's not a dramatic off-grid transformation, but saving roughly $40–$57 a month feels very real. The biggest difference comes from avoiding the 4-9pm peak rate. I set a reserve level of 25%, so there is still backup if the utility fails, and let the system discharge automatically during peak hours. On sunny days, I often finish with 35-45% remaining, which is enough to carry overnight essentials like the refrigerator, Wi-Fi, and a few lights.
My one real hiccup happened during a week of heavy rain. The battery stopped charging at 62% and the inverter showed a communication warning. I power-cycled the inverter and checked the battery disconnect, but the warning returned. A support technician noticed the monitoring app had lost the current-sensor connection. Reseating one small plug fixed it, and the battery resumed charging within minutes. It was a minor issue, but it reminded me that solar storage is still electrical equipment, not an appliance I can completely forget.
The 48volt 10kw setup has been quiet, and I have not needed to expand it yet. For my household, the practical win is predictable evening power: I use more of my own solar energy, draw less during peak pricing, and worry less about short outages each month.
