2 years ago, I installed a 320ah lifepo4 docan battery beside my inverter, mainly to stop buying expensive evening electricity from the grid. Before that, my solar system exported its midday production, then I paid peak rates after dinner. The battery changed that pattern.
On a sunny day, the solar panels fill the battery to roughly 90 percent by late afternoon. Once the utility switches to peak pricing, the inverter draws from the battery instead of the grid. I run the refrigerator, internet equipment, lights, television, and the washing machine from stored power. By bedtime, the state of charge is around 35 to 45 percent. I leave a reserve for overnight essentials, so the battery is not being drained every day.
The savings are more noticeable than I expected. My previous summer bills were around $180 to $210. After adding battery storage, they have landed between $105 and $135, depending on weather and air-conditioning use. That is not a miracle, and winter savings are smaller, but avoiding those peak-hour charges has made the investment feel worthwhile. I also like seeing less solar energy wasted during the afternoon.
The only annoyance was a low-temperature warning during a cold morning. Charging paused because the battery management system was protecting the cells. I had assumed something was broken, but the monitoring app showed the reason. Once the temperature rose, charging resumed normally. I added insulation around the battery cabinet, without blocking ventilation.
So far, this lithium iron phosphate battery has been predictable and easier to live with than I imagined. I check the app a times a week, keep the connections dry and tight, and let the solar charge controller handle the work. For my home, the benefit is simple: daytime sunshine now helps pay for the evening instead of disappearing back into the grid.
